The Emotional Signature of Bureaucracy

Yesterday I signed a piece of paper. It was a pithy little assault on my bank account, but absolutely needed. After signing I paused to consider my signature.

My signature has devolved from an award-winning cursive beauty to a disheveled, illegible collection of mutant curves and dashes. On the upside, my signature now takes a fraction of a second to write.

You might be wondering what any of this has to do with bureaucracy, and I’ll be the first to tell you, “I read an article on the web that used the phrase ’emotional signature’, and then while thinking about the near impossibility of accomplishing a current work task in a timely fashion, I denounced the bureaucracy inherent in large organizations, and that after seeing a voice imprint etched on wood, followed by signing a piece of paper and pondering the indecipherability of my devolved signature, I randomly thought of a good blog post topic – the emotional signature of bureaucracy.

But what is the emotional signature of bureaucracy? No clue. Though I imagine it’d be a collection of mutant curves and dashes that represent the following ratio –

Number of people with the authority to make a decision / Number of decisions that must be made
