“Dad, this is my Octagon!”
I looked at the sticks, painted and taped together, forming an X.
“That’s cool. Where’d you learn about octagons?”
“Well, octagons are like this. First you…,” and thus began a minute long explanation of taping sticks together and painting them.
It’s still a mystery where the word came from, but I suspect, like the “number infinity”, some older kid dropped the word in conversation and it stuck. Or maybe the word appeared on one of the million kid-friendly shows on Netflix or Disney+.
